Groups for Regulation

While there are more than 100 groups signed on in support of the Firearms Safety and Consumer Protection Act, a few organizations have focused their gun policy efforts on the consumer product approach. Those organizations are listed below, as are links to their organizations. State and local organizations are listed alphabetically by state. Each of the links listed below will take you to another website.


National Organizations

Children's Defense Fund
The Children's Defense Fund works to ensure that every child has a safe start in life by identifying and promoting programs and policies that keep children out of trouble, protect them from violence, and provide them with a safe and productive learning environment. Gun violencecontinues to plague our communities, taking the lives of more than 3,000 children and teenagers each year. Learn more about the problem of gun violence, its impact on children, and what you can do to help make your community safe.

Consumer Federation of America
Consumer Federation of America (CFA) is an association of 300 pro-consumer groups that was established to advance the consumer interest through advocacy, research, and education. Assuring the safety of consumer products is a priority of CFA.

National Association for Child Advocates
The National Association of Child Advocates (NACA) began its gun policy project, Child Safe: Child Advocates Fighting the Epidemic of Child Gun Injuries, in 2001. The purpose of Child Safe is to develop the capacity of NACA members (state and local child advocacy organizations) to reduce the number of gun injuries and deaths suffered by children and their families, focusing especially on the public health effects of guns and the need for consumer product safety regulation of guns and gun accessories, as well as on initiatives to improve the collection of data on gun-related injuries and deaths. Through Child Safe, all NACA members receive information, materials, communications support and technical assistance provided by the NACA office, which will enhance their ability to react to crisis events, such as school shootings in their states, and to respond to negative gun policies put forward in their states.

In addition, five NACA members have been awarded pass-through grants to enhance their capacity to work proactively advocating for new legislative initiatives in their states and at the federal level. Those NACA members are: Voices for Illinois Children, , New Mexico Advocates for Children & Families, , Black Children's Institute of Tennessee, , The Action Alliance for Virginia's Children and Youth, , and Wisconsin Council on Children and Families,

Physicians for Social Responsibility
Physicians for Social Responsibility believes that America's epidemic of gun injury and death is a public health challenge. PSR's Violence Prevention Program works nationally to provide analysis of the issue from a public health perspective, and to promote realistic violence prevention methods among the public, lawmakers and the media. PSR aims to address the issue of gun violence locally by educating health professionals about violence prevention and mobilizing them to enlist in community-based efforts designed to reduce the problem.


Violence Policy Center
The Violence Policy Center is a national non?profit educational foundation that conducts research on violence in America and works to develop violence?reduction policies and proposals. The Center examines the role of firearms in America, conducts research on firearms violence, and explores new ways to decrease firearm?related death and injury.

Consumer Federation of California
Consumer Federation of California (CFC) is a non-profit organization that works to promote issues of concern to California consumers.

Florida Consumer Action Network
The Florida Consumer Action Network is a grassroots organization, which empowers citizens to
influence public policy by organizing and educating in areas where consumer voices are under-represented.

Champaign County Health Care Consumers (IL)
The Champaign County Health Care Consumers is a non?profit, grassroots organization founded on the premise of participatory democracy and the belief that meaningful reforms in the health care system will come only with the active involvement of consumers.

Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence
Illinois Council Against Handgun Violence (ICHV) educates the public about the epidemic of handgun violence and works to reduce death and injury caused by the easy accessibility of firearms in our society. ICHV realizes its mission through public education, research publications and serving as an information source.

Iowans for the Prevention of Gun Violence
Our mission is to reduce firearm related deaths and injuries in Iowa, and to make Iowa a role model for other states in the area of gun violence prevention. We are concerned with all forms of gun violence--gun homicides, gun suicides, and unintentional shootings.

Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition, Inc.
The Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition (Maryland Consumers) is a non?profit organization made up of individuals and organizations concerned about educating, protecting and advocating for Maryland consumers.

Massachusetts Consumers' Council
The Massachusetts Consumers' Council (MCC) was established in 1976 by representatives of local, state and federal consumer agencies, consumer advocacy organizations and others who were concerned with protecting consumers and ensuring fairness in the marketplace.

Citizens for a Safer Minnesota Educational Fund
Citizens for a Safer Minnesota is a member-based, non-profit organization working to end gun violence. Respecting Minnesota's long hunting tradition, we educate the public about the causes of gun violence and advocate for sensible solutions. Using a public health model of prevention we support policies that protect children, make guns safer and keep weapons out of the wrong hands.

New York PIRG
The New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG) is New York State's largest consumer, environmental and government reform organization. We are a nonpartisan, not?for?profit group
established to effect policy reforms while training students and other New Yorkers to be advocates.

North Carolina Consumers Council, Inc.
North Carolina Consumers Council, Inc. (NCCC) is a 501(c)(4) consumer advocacy and educational organization that, since 1968, has worked on state and national issues of concern to North Carolina's consumers.

Ohio Coalition Against Gun Violence
Our goal is to increase safety in Ohio in regards to firearms. We educate the public about gun homicides, suicides, and unintentional deaths and injuries. The Coalition supports and encourages local, state, and federal legislation to reduce the accessibility of firearms in our communities and families.

Oregon Consumers League
The Oregon Consumer League works to protect Oregon consumers in the marketplace. We focus on consumer issues that arise when buying goods or services. We are an independent source of product information and consumer power.


Mercer County Community Action Agency (PA)

Mercer Community Action Agency (MCCAA) Consumer Affairs is a non-profit organization that offers information and referral to appropriate consumer agencies and consumer education for residents of Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

Texas Citizen Fund
Texas Citizen Fund (TCF) is a non-profit consumer organization that advocates on behalf of Texas families to ensure their safety, health, environmental protection, and financial well-being. Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort Educational Fund
Wisconsin Anti-Violence Effort Educational Fund is Wisconsin's only statewide grassroots organization solely dedicated to reducing gun violence, injuries, and death.
